Understanding behaviour (Communication at work)
One of the most difficult aspects of management is working effectively
with people, and everything a manger achieves depends on working
effectively with the people around them. We have all experienced times
when the behaviour of other people at work seems unusual, we may know
people entirely committed to their job despite being under great
stress, alternatively you may know someone who is completely
demotivated despite being very well paid. Managers have to understand
the issues that lead people to respond differently to similar
incentives or conditions of work.
You may already be giving explanations in your head, such as people
having different drivers and motivators etc. This session looks at
behaviour in the workplace and gives various explanations of this
behaviour before examining how people construct their own
understanding of particular situations, projects and relationships.
We then go on to look at 4 key themes that relate to communication at
work, looking first at the different channels normally used, before
considering communication in a more abstract way. Along with these and
the 2 remaining themes, drawn together we look at the factors in
effective communication.
Some topics in the session are:
Understanding behaviour at work
The individual in charge
Common mistakes
Communication channels
Communication processes
Effective communication |
Managers will leave with a great deal after this session,
undoubtedly looking forward to the next. Delegates will recognise some
of the assumptions behind their own behaviour and demonstrate an
enhanced perception of how others behave and how others have differing
perceptions about them. Managers will be able to define the social
pressures and constraints that impact on behaviour at work.
Also, as a result of the communication element of this session,
managers will learn how to analyse their communication interactions
with others, appreciate how organisational conditions influence
communication, and be able to develop a strategy for improving
communication effectiveness.
This is an ideal course for every people manager, giving an insight
into behaviour at work and how to communicate with that behaviour
effectively is an essential tool for the manager in today’s business
climate.
